Background
Tauranga City Council engaged TECL to design a replacement coastal erosion protection structure at the Anchorage Grove Reserve, Maungatapu. The existing seawall was in a state of disrepair and was no longer a serviceable seawall.
Objectives and Constraints
The proposed development involved replacing the existing grouted rock wall with a MagnumStone pre-cast concrete block seawall. A replacement concrete ramp and new stairs were also incorporated into the project to enhance accessibility.
The new seawall comprises of two tiers each measuring approximately 915mm in height. The lower tier spans about 65 metres, while the upper tier extends approximately 33 metres. Although a detailed geotechnical investigation was not feasible due to the high density of underground services, a comprehensive site topographical survey was conducted.
Unforeseen poor ground conditions were encountered when constructing the foundation which led to the foundation design being investigated. Design levels were also confirmed on site and the design of the stairs, ramp and sea wall were adjusted and amended throughout the project.
