Pāpāmoa Hills Upgrade – Tomokanga

Background

The Pāpāmoa Hills Cultural Heritage Regional Park welcomes over 100,000 patrons every year and is home to over 1,600 archaeological features.

In 2017, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council began discussions with local Iwi regarding the upgrade of the car park and visitor entrance to the park. These upgrades aimed to improve public safety and better represent the significance of the park within the community. The new entrance to the park now features an area dedicated to interpreting the land’s cultural and historical importance, offering visitors insights into the history and cultural background of the Pāpāmoa Hills.

Tiaki Engineering Consultants Ltd (TECL) had the privilege of working with Law Creative to bring the Tomokanga (entranceway) to life. Law Creative handled the artistic design and fabrication of the structure, while TECL certified the structural integrity of the solution.

Project Objectives

The project’s main objective was to emphasise the use of timber. Initially, an engineered timber frame was considered, but the final design featured steel hollowed sections dressed in a wood timber façade that makes up the artistic exterior. This approach provided the necessary strength, stiffness, and economy without compromising aesthetics.

Project Outcomes

The new entranceway not only serves as a gateway to the Pāpāmoa Hills Park but also as a symbol of the area’s historical and cultural significance. The collaboration between Law Creative, TECL and the artist resulted in an iconic, yet practical solution for this historic site.
