Background
Ballance Agri-Nutrients engaged Tiaki Engineering Consultants to provide the structural and foundation design for a new dispatch plant at the Rotorua Outlet. The retrofitted design aims to improve plant efficiency and productivity, facilitating smoother truck flow through the dispatch outlet.
Objectives and Constraints
The project involved integrating existing structural steel elements with a newly designed main structure to support the blender bins and load-out hopper. During the foundation preparation, unexpected slab thicknesses and clashes with existing foundations were discovered, which did not match the original as-built drawings. As a result, modifications were required for certain aspects of the foundation design and some legs of the main structure during construction.
Another challenge was the need to dismantle and rebuild the plant within a small window during the quiet period in winter, ensuring it would be operational by spring. Given the limited timeframe, the structure needed to be assembled even as the concrete foundations were still curing. It was crucial, however, to ensure that the concrete was fully cured before proceeding with the installation of the chemical anchors. A safe and feasible solution was devised to enable both processes to occur simultaneously.
Outcomes
TECL, in collaboration with Ballance Agri-Nutrients, completed the project ahead of schedule and to a high standard, ensuring that unforeseen challenges were promptly addressed and resolved.
