Background
Tauranga City Council (TCC) proposed maintenance and upgrades to the existing erosion protection structure on the council esplanade. The Sulphur Point Groyne is located directly seaward of Tauranga’s Yacht Club at Sulphur Point. The original structure consisted of a rip- rap rock groyne with a concrete pathway on top.
Project Objectives
In partnership with the Tauranga Yacht Club, TCC’s objective was to reposition the concrete path to facilitate yacht access during planned club events. A key consideration was to enhance accessibility for the club’s diverse membership, some of whom require assisted access.
Project Outcomes
The upgrade resulted in an efficient and well-presented solution. The new pathway has become a valuable community asset, proving to be popular with the local Tauranga community. It offers enhanced access for various activities, including swimming, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, fishing, and club events. Most importantly, from an accessibility standpoint, the new path is wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs and includes specific locations where individuals can be lifted onto boats, enabling everyone to enjoy a day on the water.
