Waihoehoe Pedestrian Bridge

Background

TECL was engaged to design a new pedestrian bridge as part of our client’s larger subdivision development. The bridge, spanning 18 meters in length and 4.4 meters in width, stands out as the broadest pony truss-style bridge we have ever designed. Serving both pedestrian and cyclist traffic, this project required a blend of functionality and cultural expression, making it a unique addition to the area.

Objectives and Constraints

This collaborative project involved an architect and a Māori artist. The bridge was designed not only as a practical means of connectivity but also as a cultural landmark. Māori art was incorporated through ancillary fixtures, including Kō (paddles), which evoke a tribal aesthetic and celebrate the region’s rich heritage. The challenge was seamlessly integrating these cultural elements into a robust and functional structure while maintaining its visual appeal and usability.

Outcomes

The result is a striking and functional structure beyond its role as a pedestrian bridge. It serves as a cultural centrepiece, fostering connections between communities and showcasing the essence of Māori culture. This bridge is more than just infrastructure—it symbolises unity, heritage, and thoughtful design, leaving a lasting impression on all who use it.
