Background
Bridge It NZ engaged Tiaki Engineering Consultants to design a pedestrian bridge to cross the Maketu Stream in Drury South, Tāmaki Makaurau.
The project links a network of walkways from a nearby development of greenfield land to new commercial areas, and as such, cost, safety and functionality were the primary constraints.
The steel-beam/timber-deck design provided by TECL minimised cost while safely accommodating the required 4 kPa basic live load of SNZ HB 8630:2004 (Tracks and outdoor visitor structures).
The bridge abutments were precast concrete on steel-driven piles, and the pedestrian approaches were formed with timber retaining wing walls.
Non-climbable steel handrails were an essential addition due to the height and the intended use of the bridge by the public.
TECL’s design qualified for building consent exemption from Auckland Council.
