Geotechnical Fieldwork
Site Investigation and Reporting
Tiaki has more than a decade of in-house experience with geotechnical site investigations. Our knowledge base covers most geological areas of NZ, with a particular niche in our immediate environment. We focus on delivering tailored, outcome-driven project solutions – on time, and on budget.
TECL’s fieldwork team primarily provides in-house expertise and capability for geotechnical, structural, and civil engineering projects; reducing lead times and inter-organisational complexities. Our fieldwork capabilities enable safe, accurate, and efficient advice for foundations, infrastructure development, civil engineering design, earthworks, retaining walls, and other structures.
We can offer site investigation services for all property sizes; from a single-house lot to a major subdivision or commercial site. When peer review is necessary we can either utilise our existing relationships with category 1 and 2 geo-professional accredited engineers, or work with your chosen professionals for peace of mind.
Services include:
- All fieldwork planning, testing and reporting services
- Hand auger
- Scala penetrometer testing (DCP)
- Shear vane testing
- Soakage testing for stormwater disposal system design
- Deep borehole testing and specialist equipment via our professional network
- Site monitoring and verification during construction projects
A residential house project in a remote Western Bay of Plenty coastal ridge location required geotechnical assessment and testing. The Client required confirmation of the house pad’s foundation due to site-specific geohazards, which included; landslip risk, soft ground, and unpredictable depth to bedrock.
Tiaki mobilised to site, completed the testing, and delivered a report to allow the house plans to be drafted and Building Consent application to be lodged. The report included geohazard management proposals, which were verified by the TECL Fieldwork team during construction and validated against the design information.
Investigation and Measurement
Site aspects that TECL investigate include the soil, underlying strata, and groundwater. Metrics that we measure include soil layer composition, thickness and geological origin; geotechnical properties including strength, stiffness, and earthquake performance; and groundwater levels and soil permeability.
To provide the most accurate picture possible, we incorporate data from all available sources in our reports and recommendations.
The TECL field team also provide measurement and verification of in-progress works, checking dimensions, materials specifications and engineering performance during construction of foundations, retaining walls and earthworks
- Geological profile
- Geotechnical properties
- Hydrological properties
- Structural works verification
- Earthworks verification
Modelling and Assessment
Our geotechnical services include foundation settlement modeling of both deep and shallow foundations, soil liquefaction modeling and assessment, and stability modeling and assessment of natural and man-made batters.
- Ground profile modelling
- Liquefaction
- Slope stability
- Works assessment
