Seismic Restraints

The unpredictable, violent loading of an earthquake on otherwise-static assets can easily be underestimated.  In order to retain service functionality throughout a seismic event, assets need to be adequately restrained from movement. TECL’s Structural Engineers are experts in this field.

Seismic Restraints

Securing Plant and Infrastructure

Having been involved in seismic restraint projects ranging from a few high-risk cabinets to an entire commercial building worth of assets, Tiaki Engineering Consultants have broad and detailed experience in this field.

Our clients vary from small-scale contractors to large corporations with vast installations. Working from first principles and extensive experience with industry products, Tiaki Engineering Consultants can easily adapt to your project’s specific requirements.

TECL’s services include the design, design review, and construction monitoring of seismic restraint systems that meet the NZS 4219:2009 (Seismic Performance of Engineering Systems in Buildings) standard. In commercial settings, our work tends to focus on building services such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and data infrastructure. In industrial settings, the focus is often on piping, plant and equipment, and stationary machinery.

Because of the specialised regulations involved, our team does, however, not engage in seismic restraint projects for fire sprinkler systems (NZS 4541:2007) or lifts and elevators (NZS 4332:1997).

Notable Project: Zespri Head Office Redevelopment

TECL was engaged by a leading contractor to provide seismic restraint designs and construction monitoring for electrical switchboards, distribution boards, and data cabinets as a part of an overarching redevelopment project of the Zespri head office in Mount Maunganui.

We determined that, in order to satisfy NZS 4219:2009, it was necessary to mount the switchboards and electrical distribution boards on steel frames that would transfer the load into the floor, as the walls could not appropriately transfer seismic loading back into the main structural frame.

Since the data cabinets had been installed on floating floors, steel frames that penetrated the floors were similarly needed to transfer the load down to the concrete slab below.

TECL provided the engineering design for the frames and connections, and closely monitored the installation of the seismic restraints as per the design to ensure compliance with NZS 4219:2009.

This project illustrates one of the many specialist engineering services that we carry out for general contractors.
