Objectives
In 2012, a couple in Ohakune purchased a property that featured a derelict, decommissioned train bridge as the property’s only long-term access route over the Mangateitei stream. The beautiful old structure wasn’t safe to drive over, but was deemed worth saving.
Tiaki Engineering Consultants analysed the structure in its almost century-old condition, assessing the rot, rust, foundations and truss design. We made appropriate recommendations to ensure it could be viably refurbished to withstand 0.85HN loading (light vehicle access). Our construction partners carried out the refurbishment with our technical input.
Outcomes
The refurbishment of this historic railway bridge not only allows reliable property access for the owners, but also provides enjoyment and interest for the thousands of tourists that visit Ohakune each year. The bridge remains very true to its original form, albeit naturally at a reduced loading.
