Totangi Properties Limited Bridge

Background

The Totangi Properties Limited Bridge project played a crucial role in enhancing access to a significant forestry block approaching maturity. The preexisting access, an in-stream crossing imposed restrictions on the movement of large forestry vehicles.

Tasked with addressing this challenge, Tiaki Engineering Consultants (TECL) initially explored options to retain the existing ford crossing for over-dimension vehicles. However, site constraints became apparent, indicating that parallel crossings were impractical. Consequently, the team determined that a single new bridge would be the most viable solution. Given site limitations, a timber retaining wall system with tied across wing walls which were employed to optimise the footprint, considering the substantial fill required at the approaches to achieve design deck levels on the chosen alignment.

TECL opted to design an HN-HO-72, 14 m long steel beam concrete decked bridge, specifically tailored to accommodate the largest forestry vehicles comfortably.

Employing a meticulous approach, TECL conducted a comprehensive analysis, which included detailed vehicle assessments as integral components of the final HN-HO-72 design process.

The bridge was meticulously engineered to meet stringent standards for durability and load-bearing capacity, addressing the unique requirements of the forestry vehicles accessing the area.

Project Outcomes

The project maximised the use of the constrained site dimensions by implementing an efficient and robust HN-HO-72 design. Engineered to endure, the bridge is projected to have a lifespan of 50 years. This strategic and durable solution stands as a significant asset for Totangi Properties, markedly enhancing access for forestry operations and guaranteeing sustained functionality for decades to come.
