Background
The Dean Family Trust Bridge project required a replacement bridge across a large drain to provide a stock crossing and access to the farm. The new bridge needed to be more permanent and substantial to accommodate contractor vehicles like tankers and fertiliser trucks.
The existing crossing was by way of a 20 ft steel ‘flat rack’ shipping platform, which understandably was only suitable for stock and light vehicles.
TECL designed a Concrete Flat Panel (CFP) bridge for this project. These structures are ideal for use in rural areas, as they can be manufactured off-site then trucked and craned into place in locations that are difficult to access. Importantly, CFP bridges are both cost-effective and long-lasting for their loading. Precast concrete abutments were chosen for their similar benefits, and steel driven piles were specified to hold the abutments in place.
Our construction partners at Bridge It NZ were responsible for the manufacture and installation of the bridge, which comprised three 8.5 m-long sections for a total installed width of 4.8 m.
Based on NZTA Bridge Manual Appendix D, the design satisfied 0.85HN, making it suitable for low-traffic heavy vehicles, with a maximum 7.5 tonne single axle load / 15 tonne dual. Galvanised pipe railings and kerbs for wheels and hoofs were specified for on-farm safety.
