Rotorua Haulage Bridge

Background

It’s not every day that you see a bridge that is wider than it is long!

The Rotorua Haulage Bridge is an interesting engineering project to span a drainage channel within a heavy haulage staging area close to the shores of Lake Rotorua. The requirements centred around a 30 m wide, 10 m long bridge to facilitate maximum use of the site by allowing various truck and trailer turning paths over the drain, as the existing narrow crossing limited site use. The design needed to consider multiple trafficable paths, the possibility of submergence due to identified flood risks, poor ground conditions and a risk of liquefaction.

Project Outcomes

Being so close to Lake Rotorua, and a high-water table area, the Tiaki Geotechnical Team conducted cone penetrometer testing and a liquefaction assessment to accurately assess the ground conditions. Cheal Consultants were responsible for the civil and consenting aspects of the project.

TECL then designed a suitable bridge, employing prestressed concrete beams and precast concrete crossheads on steel-driven piles to accommodate full HN-HO-72 loading according to the NZTA Bridge Manual. It was also designed to withstand lateral hydrodynamic loading as the bridge is expected to flood.

The client had specified a very ambitious timeframe to have the bridge installed, and with diligent effort, the project team met all expectations. The project commenced in November 2021 and was completed in March 2022.
