Background
To maintain pace with the rapid and ongoing population growth of Papamoa, the Tauranga City Council identified the need to enhance the security of the potable water supply. The solution: the Eastern Reservoir, located in the Welcome Bay hills, designed by Tiaki Engineering Consultants.
Objectives and Constraints
Tiaki Engineering Consultants were awarded the Professional Services contract to undertake the design and construction monitoring of the new ten-megalitre reservoir on behalf of TCC.
The contract involved approximately 80,000 m³ of earthworks and associated stormwater infrastructure, about 2900m of potable water bulk pipelines, a 10,000 m³ reservoir tank, control valves, and other related works.
The physical works were divided into three stages; earthworks, the construction of the reservoir tank, and the construction of the water supply pipeline and associated infrastructure.
Project Outcomes
The Eastern Reservoir Project has brought significant benefits to the community and the environment. The construction of this new reservoir has increased potable water storage capacity, thereby increasing the resilience of Tauranga City’s water supply.
Tiaki’s project team worked closely with the Tauranga City Council to ensure the project met all design and regulatory requirements. Archaeology at the reservoir site was identified as being significant, and Tiaki worked closely with the Project Archaeologist to obtain the necessary Heritage NZ Authorities and approvals.
Overall, the Eastern Reservoir Project has delivered a reliable and resilient water supply system for the Tauranga community. The project team’s attention to detail, planning, and community engagement have led to positive outcomes that have met the needs of the community and environment.
