Hauraki District Council (HDC)
Background
The Mahuta Road North Bridge project was commissioned by the HDC to replace the existing narrow single lane timber bridge originally constructed in 1924. The new bridge needed to be a single lane, but with an option to increase the width in future as traffic volumes increased over time. Mahuta Road North is utilised as an alternative access or detour route that links SH2 with SH25. Therefore, the primary objective of the design was to create a new bridge that is safe for residents, traffic, and heavy vehicles. Providing a reliable and efficient transportation solution for the Hauraki community was of utmost importance.
During the detailed design process several options were considered for the bridge replacement, including precast box culverts, and other bridge configurations. The final design was a 25m single span double hollow core concrete bridge, with a 4.1m trafficable lane between the guardrails. The new bridge, can now not only withstand anticipated traffic but also has the option for increased future capacity if required.
Tiaki Engineering Consultations delivered a design for a 25m long prestressed double hollow-core precast beam structure. Replacing the historic timber bridge on Mahuta Road North for vehicle crossing over Waitakaruru Canal with a 100-year design life.
The engineering techniques and materials used ensure the long-term functionality of the bridge. Tiaki provided the Engineer with the contract, working on behalf of HDC, and our project managers successfully ensured the project’s timely completion and adherence to the allocated budget. Ultimately, the bridge has been replaced with a structure that focuses on quality and adheres to all necessary regulations and requirements. The existing old timber bridge was successfully salvaged and made available to the local community for use on future projects.
The successful completion of the project within the designated timeframe, despite significant delays caused by multiple cyclone events, and staying within the allocated budget, is a testament to the remarkable achievement of the Tiaki team and the HDC.
