Pyes Pa Reservoir

March 2017

Project Client

Tauranga City Council

Background

The Lakes area of Tauranga is a popular, fast-growing suburb. This area, as well as the newly developing Tauriko commercial and industrial hub, was in need of new infrastructure and strategic assets to keep up with the increased demand. The capable team at Tiaki was able to facilitate the first new Potable Water Reservoir to meet the needs of the Tauranga City Council.

Project Objective

The recent development of the Tauriko commercial district and the Lakes residential area necessitated the construction of bulk potable water storage to serve the area for current and future growth.

The construction of the bulk water infrastructure project was implemented through three contracts: The first contract entailed preload removal, bulk earthworks, stormwater, and the construction of retaining walls as site preparation. The second task was the design and supply of an epoxy-coated steel bolted water reservoir tank with a capacity of 10 megalitres. This tank was constructed on the northern side of the site, with provision for a second reservoir on the southern side in the future. The initial reservoir comprised a 40-meter diameter tank with 8.5-meter high walls, a geodesic domed roof, and a concrete floor slab foundation. Lastly, the reservoir was tied into the existing water supply after a disinfection and commissioning regime. The project required the inclusion of a booster pump station and a backup diesel generator building to guarantee redundancy to the original gravity main supply from Joyce Rd.

The timely construction of the Pyes Pa Reservoir No 1 and Booster Pump Station not only allows the good people of Tauranga an additional reliable potable drinking water storage node, but it also manifestly represents the considerable expansion of the population under the care of the Tauranga City Council.
