Objectives
Tiaki Engineering Consultants were engaged by Tauranga City Council to undertake structural design and construction monitoring services for a variety of coastal sea walls that required renewal in the Tauranga area.
Design and construction challenges included safeguarding the beach and marine environment, designing for long term erosion mitigation, soft ground conditions, and excavation on sites of archaeological importance.
The locations of the proposed replacement coastal structures included Kulim Park, Tye Park, Forrester Drive Esplanade Reserve, and 87 Matua Road Esplanade Reserve.
Outcomes
TECL effectively collaborated with various specialists to provide designs and construction methods that would overcome the unique site and engineering challenges.
Our services to TCC on this project included geotechnical assessments of the existing sea wall structures and sites, detailed engineering design, resource consenting support, and construction monitoring for each of the replacement coastal protection structures. A range of wall types were employed, including timber pole, rip rap, and grouted rock walls.
With TECL’s oversight, contractors replaced the extant deteriorating walls with walls of our design. Ultimately, the park environments have been restored and secured against erosion for decades to come.
